What do you guys recommend for bench?

For a long time, I used to use dumbbells but then I switched to barbell and have been doing that for a few years now. I was wondering if I should mix up my chest routine and go back to dumbbells for a while or rotate between the 2.

What do you guys think is better for chest development?

I think barbell flat bench since it allows more weight. but I've also seen a study that showed more muscle is recruited using dumbbells. i just do both.

I mostly use db's because I work out alone and don't have a spotter. I typically finish my sets with 85's or 90's but have noticed that my bb bench has become a little weaker. I hit 410lbs at my peak on bb bench until I hurt my shoulder and haven't been able to get back to real heavy bench work since. The last time I did any bb bench work I was able to rep out 275 around 7-8 times and it felt like shit.

So, hard to say for me but I think the db's actually made my bench press weaker, but it may have developed my chest better. If I had a spotter I would probably stick to bb bench.

If that makes any sense :dunno:

i do both bench cause i can only go so high with dumbells since most places max out at 100lbs, granted im not doing 100+ with dumbells yet enought to go up farther cause im getting like 3-4 with 100's

I switch it up every year or two. Just went back to flat BB a few months ago, enjoying it.

typically start with BB in a rep range of somewhere between 4 and 8 for my working sets then follow up with DBs in the rep range of 10 - 20

    For "chest development", probably DB.

    For overall development, BB.

    That being said, do both.

People who don't utilize both are missing the boat.

dumbbells so you're less likely to cheat and bounce the weight off your chest

LOL as opposed to dumbells where the average ROM is about 1" and it's a tricep press? How about some discipline while lifting?

Incline BB presses, no lockout at the top.

my shoulders hurt for years with barbells until i finally figured out about pinning my shoulder blades to the bench while doing the movement. since then, zero shoulder problems.
