Woman Shoots Gator That Attacks Her Dog

BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) -- A woman has shot an alligator that came into her home and attacked her dog.

The alligator was only 3 feet long, but Candy Frey wasn't taking any chances. When the reptile came into the lanai of her home east of Bradenton Saturday and attacked her golden retriever, Frey went and got her gun.

After Frey and her daughter managed to push the gator out of the lanai through the dog door, she blasted away at it four times.

"I was running on so much adrenaline," the 48-year-old former U.S. Marine aviation technician told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. "I just freaked out and shot him - boom, boom, boom, boom."

A neighbor called deputies and the state sent a wildlife officer to investigate.

The alligator barely bled from gunshots to the neck and shoulder, Frey said, and wildlife officer put it back in the lake.

The deputy gave Frey a warning citation for hunting without a license.

Alligators have been blamed for three fatal attacks in the span of a week in other parts of Florida.

You can shoot someone in FL for coming into your house and threatening you but you sure as hell better not shoot an alligator.

I read about that. I think they cleared him. Still, I wouldn't want to be the guy that shot the one of a kind animal, you know?

Just curious SQUID... where do you get all this information? I'm sure it's out there on the web somewhere. You always come up with these cases/stories that i find very interesting and i think it adds a lot to this forum. Do you know where we could go to get/look at other similar interesting stories? Good job as being the new mod and keep it up.

I've got two pits too. I have a friend that was coming up on a litter of Americans and my wife came home with the male. :squint: My daughter was already attached.

I didn't mean the gator would have killed one of those meat-heads, but instead I'm not so sure they could do enough damage to a gator with his tough skin w/o him getting ahold of one of them. Of course, there is the meat-head thing to think of.

Christ, this is going to be a new Brady Campaign talking point...

"In states like Florida you get a fine for killing an animal intruder but its perfectly legal to kill a human intruder... :mb: ... something about the value of human life... :mb: ... something about 'high powered calibers' ... :mb: ... something about taking guns away".

If she was going to shoot it should of been in the house, 3 footer if it was me I probably would of done my steve irwin impersonation with it and taken it outside and release it. Then again maybe killing it would be the smart thing to do it already knows how to get in your house and knows theres food (dog) inside dunno how smart they are if it would try to return later :dunno:
