Well, I have a chevy truck, and the alternator went bad. So I got a new one for $50, and all is well, again. My question is, is the old one something I can repair and sell? What goes into rebuilding an alternator? Anyone know where I could sell the bad alternator to be rebuilt (kinda like as a core?)

you should have been able to return the core to an autoparts store for a discount on the new alternator.

    auto stores wanted $160 + $30 core.

I got a brand-new one for $50, no exchange req.

now please stop being an asshat and either help me with my dilema, or just don't post.

You will need (for a basic rebuild):

    -replacement brushes kit
    -front brg
    -rear brg
*voltage regulator (if built into your alt., and if faulty)

This is based on my Tacoma, I rebuilt my alternator about 40k km's ago. I will say that removing the brgs is not always easy and you may need a very good/specialized puller to get them off.

That said, 99% of the time, it's just the brushes that are bad and they can be changed on the back end of the alt. NAPA sells rebuild kits if I'm not mistaken.

    NAPA has (for a '99 5.0L):

    - Brush & Holder set
    - Voltage Regulator
    - Rectifier
    - Connectors

It's all right there on www.napaonline.com
