I apologize / thank people in advance as this is rather long.

1st things 1st, when it comes to fitness I am completely ignorant to pretty much everything besides the absolute basics. I was very active in highschool, but now that I am in college I am no longer playing sports. Consequently I need some sort of good work out plan, and if possible a nutrition plan.

Unfortunately I have a dilemma when it comes to nutrition. I live in a place where I pay for food and sometimes its not healthy at all (see corndogs). On these days I try to eat something thats healthier than whats served, but it sucks throwing away money.

Further more (yes i know flame me as much as you want).... I am in college and I will be drinking beer/liquor about atleast 2 nights a week. Yes I know beer and nutritious eating are almost complete opposites, but its a part of my life i am not giving up. I know there have to be plenty of you out there who go out and drink and still are in great shape (I personally know quite a few guys like this). Im sure some if not most of you stopped reading right there, but keep in mind i am not trying to be the biggest guy on campus, just stay in shape and possible put on some muscle and lose some fat.

I am by no means a fatass, but I am definitely out of shape. I am about 6 feet tall and weigh about 175. I lifted pretty hard in highschool so I am fimiliar with all of the machinery / weights etc... but the routines I did then do not seem to fit my lifestyle today as I am no longer playing sports.

Basically what I want to get help on in the two fields of fitness and nutrition are as follows

    Fittness:
A plan that has atleast 2-3 days of cardio... I like to run :o
Lifting, more focus on upper body, but lower body lifts are good too

    Nutrition:
Eating a salad every day for lunch... good idea or bad idea (lots of eggs)?
Breakfast -- what could i eat thats "smart"?
Juice (apple / orage etc...) good or bad?
Protein Shakes... worth the money for what I am trying to achieve?
Cheap alternatives to meals (college poorness FTL)

I really thank any of you willing to spend time helping me out, I have been so lazy recently I seriously need to start doing something with my life. I know its not going to be easy, but I am willing to work hard its just going to be a lot easier if I have some sort of plan to go off of so I kinda know what i am doing.

once again thank you so much for your time

I'm in almost an idential situation as yourself (except with more weight to lose), I have found if you are super careful about what you eat at the cafeteria you can make it work. Also, I always have some stuff back in my dorm which I know is healthy if I can't find anything at the cafeteria. I eat a ton of cottage cheese, relatively cheap with tons of protein, also some tuna. Protein shakes are great imo, considering the amount of protein you are getting in a shake it really isn't very expensive compared to your alternatives.

As for juices, I don't really have enough knowledge to speak with an certainty, but from what I have read most juices contain way to much sugar and much of the actual nutrition that was in the fruits is lost, so you're probably best eating fresh fruit.

Personally I think it would be best to just read as much as you can about this stuff. It helps motivate me knowing WHY I am doing all the things I do, instead of simply doing them. It is super easy to skip over important areas because you didn't understand the effect they have.

for breakfast i'd suggest some oatmeal or all bran flakes. and yeah, you're better off eating the fruits instead of just the juice. cut down on all other sodas and just drink water. when you're not drinking beer that is.
also, i suppose you can microwave a potato or two.

Cut out the beer dude. Or limit yourself to once a week and use that as your cheat day.

What you need is not a routine that fits your lifestyle. You should see it the other way around : a healthy individual will change his lifestyle so that it incorporates healthy habits such as sports and nutrition.

Motivation is something you have to find in yourself, we can't help you there.

Maybe I'm just weird, but support from outside never made any difference to me. I decide if i'm going to do it, what anybody else says doesn't really matter.

yeah, but sometimes compliments and people noticing..etc can help when the changes start to occur.
