So i'm reading a t-nation article and it recommends 30-45 grams of fish oil, which is quite a lot, and that it's much easier to take straight, instead of pill. how many grams do you guys take? any products/sites you know that gives the best bang for your buck (least dollars per gram of EPA and DHA)?

i'm currently taking costco kirkland ones, which was pretty cheap at about 10 bucks for 400 pills. but each pill has less than 200mg EPA and DHA i think.

    30 to 45 grams!! FRAK!

I take fish oil softgels but I could never imagine taking 45,000 mg a day! I usually try to get around 1,000 mg combined of EPA and DHA (which is usually 2-6 softgels depending on which brand it is)

Just make sure you're getting a brand that tests for heavy metals

"Anyone who wants to put on muscle and lose fat should be on 30-45 grams of fish oil per day. That's just three tablespoons of fish oil. It would be a pain in the ass with capsules though because that's around 45 capsules per day, but it's easy with a straight oil."

read the 3rd paragraph after the geico barbarian (i think it's geico)

30-45 grams is retarded; at that levels you start suppressing your immune system. 10-12 grams *max* per day is the limit I've seen.

what happens when you use fish oil to cook? does it destroy all the good parts of it? not that i want all my food to taste like fish, just a thought.

i love this reply on the article:

I just thought of 2 new methods for fish oil consumption.

    1) freeze the liquid in cubes

    2) if you have no gag reflex and aren't too homophobic, deepthoat a filled turkey baster and suck it down like a t-vixen

The important thing is the amount of DHA/EPA, not the amount of fish oil taken. I think 3g of EPA/DHA is the sweet spot generally, but just taking fish oil pills which have a higher % of EPA/DHA is fine.

Polyunsaturated fat (like omega-3) aren't perfect for cooking at high temperature. At really high temp, saturated fat is better (butter). A blend of olive oil (monounsaturated fat) and butter will give you the best of both worlds.

i don't think it can be argued about the amount of DHA/EPA, that's definitely true.

so the only question now, what's the best bang for the buck fish oil to take? sure costco fish oil is cheap, but it's low in DHA/EPA.

what do those on OT think about t-nation products, like that Flameout thing they keep talking about. i'm a bit weary about people talking about that stuff on the site, since it may be a bit biased.

all brands of fish oil tell you what % or amount of DHA/EPA they contain so find some with higher %'s

MMmm fish oil.. i chew on fish oil caps as a snack. And or drink the liquid straight. I like the flavor. :dunno:
Vitamin shoppe has a decent lemon flavored cod liver oil in a bottle. I take sonne's organic for full fish flavor.

I think its the cod liver oil that one has to be more careful with in terms of contaminants.
