These were taken from my newly acquired Canon 30D..... Funny story how I bought this camera. I was borrowing it from arostad (fellow OTer) and I was sitting in the consession area and two kids were running around and they ran into the table and knocked it off the table. The battery grip has a small crack in it, and the lense hood as a scuff. I felt bad for taking his minty 30D and having some kids knock it to the ground, so I bought the thing from him. This is exactly why I hate borrowing shit from people! I shot some pics and it seems fine, but for safety sake Im going to send it and the lense in for warranty, say the pics look fuzzy or something so they can run some tests through it just in case. This is my first time using and SLR so please be nice to me :big grin: But i wanna know if Im OK, I suck, is there hope for me, etc etc. Is it poor taste to post this many photos at once? Thanks for all input you can provide me.

Finger guy needs to stop biting his nail, that shit made me dry heave.

As for your photos, they are what they are. Day one stuff. For what they are they're average I guess. People rarely have "raw" talent, especally with new gear, some just get luckier more often. You'll need to learn about composition, exposure blah blah. Read the stickies, they'll get you competent. You should also get some kind of post processing app, I suggest Adobe Lightroom. :coolugh:

Right now you're just pointing your camera at something and pushing the shutter button, once you start putting thought into your composition and lighting and actually try to create a photo you have in your head first, I'll be able to tell you what I think is wrong with a certain shot.

You have a damn fine camera. If you want to test your lens you can take a photo of text printed on a box or other glossy surface. It'll give you an idea of the sharpness and if the camera has any problems like forward/back focus or fucked lens elements, but if you don't mind spending the money having everything looked over after a drop is never a bad idea.

What lens is it, by the way?

I do think alot about composition, lighting, and overall what I want in the picture, i find im more trial and error. but I think since I dont really know how to use this camera its maybe where my vision is being held back, does that make sense? I'll admit some of my car pics were just point and shoot, because I wanted to get the entire car in there.... I'll post some of my other pics from my point and shoot sony.

The lense im using is a Canon EFS 17-55mm f/2.8 IS Ultrasonic, I was told its a good all around lense, I just ordered an EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 ultra wide.

How did I get permission to take pictures in a casino? I didnt, I own a stripclub and we have charity gaming and blackjack is one of the games allowed by state. The picture was staged actually after we closed.... I should have stacked more chips but in reality the state only allows $25 max betting so thats what we did. I did try and mess with LR on the blackjack table, in fact I did change a few things in most of the pics in LR, like bumping up the contrast a little, or adjust color levels, but I didnt do anything to drastic, just tried to make it more vibrant.

What are the advantages of shooting in RAW, and what are some standard tricks to do in LR to help my photos? Thanks!!!

Older pics I took with my Sony

you're a good guy for manning up and not giving him back a dropped camera.
that being said you have some WB issues. also things look a little udnerexposed. not to serious though, keep shooting and you'll nail it in no time.

Dude im anal about my shit.... and I only feel its right to return something in the same or better condition that it was given to me. He said I could just replace the parts, but I felt really bad so I just bought the whole thing from him and Im just going to send it in for warranty for piece of mind. Plus I can give him shit about him "making me" buy it, inside joke. Im sure arostad will comment in here soon. Anyways I always wanted an SLR, I just didn't want to spend the money on one right now... i have a few projects that I've been spending money on instead.

OK white balance I agree is off, especially in the shots of Sniper, it was mostly because I didn't know how to adjust it at the time. :big grin:

    pics of stripclub! jk

The shots look good for being new to using it. I have an Xti and whenever I have the settings on anything having to do with "manual" they come out blurry. Maybe I should stop loadin up on the caffeine and get a tripod...

Or shoot with a minimum shutter speed of your focal length + a click or two when hand held. So if you were shooting 50mm you'd shoot at no slower than 1/80th (1/50th if you have a steady hand) and fill in your aperture/iso according to that... But that's just a complicated way of doing Tv mode, but at least you'll learn more. And that's your actual post-crop focal length, so 50mm on a crop body would be 80mm effective which would mean shooting at 1/100th or faster..

You can see pictures of the stripclub at www.myspace.com/envyminot the stage features 2 poles, a shower, and soon, in stage smoke. I have spent many years and 1000s of dollars doing research :big grin: I will keep on shooting and trying other things... arostad gave me a dvd that i want to watch on how to use the 30d so hopefully that will help... cant hurt anyways.
