    how do you account for "softness"? i wouldn't be surprised about the camera shake because I didn't have a tripod with me....

    thats probably it. too hard to hold it steady at a low shutter speed.

    if you look at edges that would normally be sharp and it looks a little soft, thats how people consider photos to be somewhat soft. even on a tripod, you can use the softness to rate how quality the lens is too.
