580ex cam left for key, 580ex cam right for fill, and the sun for a hair light. I helped light this for a friend he took the actual photo, i did the edit. Triggered with cactus triggers. I was going for the old school candy type ad look.

    this is teh before image.

Lighting: Good, except it highlights her abundant armhair, but maybe you're into that.

Background: Meh. It could really use some of that depth and over saturation you see those crazy kids on Strobist doing, where you use your light to equally expose the person and the sky and shoot at like F11tybillion. Point is, she looks poppy, and your background looks meh, which wouldn't be a problem but it's just enough in focus to make me look at it while looking at the chick.

my critisizms have already been covered, in the L arm light, and the blown out shirt.

But really, that shirt is *that* close to being able to be written off as a specular highlight! I mean it is shiny, reflective white satin...

I also like Spurious's idea of shooting it with the background properly exposed and using your light to bring up the subject...

But for your first time lighting a person, I think you F'ing nailed it!

Get a couple of decent strobes with adjustable power settings and high speed sync. Once you do that it's not difficult.

Set camera to manual. Underexpose the background by a stop or two. Or, if you prefer, expose background for normal exposure.

Set strobes to manual and high speed sync. Place them where you want just outside the frame.

Set your strobe power to 1/2 and fire a test shot. If the strobes are too strong, reduce power and try again. You should be able to get the strobe power just right in three or four attempts. You can also use the aperture on your camera to adjust the light from the strobe. Just remember to adjust the shutter speed to compensate for the ambient light if you do.

Remember, strobe light isn't affected by shutter speed (unless it's above 1/200 sec hence the need for high speed sync) rather it's affected by aperture setting.
