i've settled on the 300D because at this point I do not feel I can justify the extra expenses of the 350D or D70 and the likes. I have a couple questions before I do buy one though.

    1. I was thinking about buying a used one, how risky is it? Do Canon Digital parts break often?
    2. I found one for $450 that includes the 300D (with 18-55 lens kit), charger, software, remote release, 2x AF converter and a Quantaray dedicated zoom/bounce/swivel flash. Is this a good deal?
    3. If I do purchase a used one, what should I be looking out for before I buy it? Are there things that I can notice that will indicate a problem down the road?

    Thanks :)

Minus a zero from that number :mamoru:

    Mine died after 11k.
Mirror assembly replaced at 11k, then shutter died 200 shots later.
    Luckily all under warranty.

    :o You got the MK2 confused with the 300D  1d was rated 150K, MK2 is 200K.

Canon has awesome customer service, as wellas camera repair, so don't worry about that.
My only sugestion is that if you don't have any experience with manual setings camera, that you take a class. It is very important to learn the basics of photography to better understand digital.

i wonder if it cheaper to fix the Mirror assembly and and shutter when it breaks or just sell in now and add the rest of the money for the 20D

There are no published numbers for the non-pro level DSLR's. Many 300D's fail around the 10-20K range while there are some well past 50k. Do a search on the whiners board (dpreview) for 'shutter life'. Then again, there are 1 series cameras failing well before the 150-200K mark. :mamoru:

    Yep.
    :IBitsnotthecamerathatmakesyouapro:

About half of what a new 300D costs :mamoru: Mine was about a month past the warranty period, but they still covered the repair. Canon Service  sometimes :coolugh:

They serviced mine a week after warranty too. My Digital Rebel shutter lasted 11k before I had to replace it. My friend's lasted 5k and 8k respectively. :hsugh:

Can someone tell me how to find out how many shots were taken on the 300D? I am negotiating with this guy and want to be able to find out how much life the camera has left

Nope. There's a program for the 1 series only. I think C1 can check actuations too, but not sure about the rebel.

Yeah, except the numbering will roll over or change if a diff CF card is used (from a different camera) :run:
