just picked up the 17-40L as you all probably know since i wnt stop making threads about it

I didn't have much time today, but I took a quick run over to Millenium park in chicago and snapped a few pics, took one more on the ride home, thought it turned out cool.

I'm really impressed so far, pics seem super sharp in comparison to other lenses i've used, and the thing focuses so nice and fast

weather was shit today, so was the light, but meh, I'm still pumped

careful while taking pics at millenium. i get harassed by the segway cops here and there. apparently millenium is copyrighted or something by the city, so anyone with "professional looking" gear is to be asked what they are doing by the cops.

only the city wants to make money off the pictures of the park. therefore anyone that could be taking pictures to profit (dslr people) are harassed and warned.

Its a public park though, isnt it?

I thought it was always legal to photograph anything from a public place?

they probably could if they wanted too, even if taking pictures is completely legal, most people aren't going to waste their time arguing with security on a power trip

Chicago is like other big cities. You need a film permit to put up a tripod. You can shoot hand held all you want.

The Pueblo Tribes of New Mexico require a license to take any photograph anywhere on their reservations. Taking a photo within a Pueblo that might include a villager will relatively often result in having to pay individuals for their image. The tribes have become very sophisticated in milking revenue from tourists, and one doesn't often see professional photographs anymore. Some of that is understandable, and not a really big deal.

On the other hand, if you stop along side the public highway 30 miles from anywhere at all with the intent of photographing a distant mesa with an interesting cloud formation, tribal police may well hassle you about not having a license. Not long ago we took some friends to Acoma Pueblo, and stopped on high bluff maybe five miles away so that our guests could get some panorama shots of the area. No photo license, no dice. We had to drive into Acoma, get licenses and then drive back to take a dozen frames.

what difference does it make if its a building or a park? both places have many many people at any given time.

and my problem is that why the hell do people think that some terrorist guy is gonna whip out a dslr and take pictures of some building. as if hes not gonna be more stealth about that shit or even use oh i dunno. a point and shoot?
