SO i recently got a job at the YMCA and with this comes a free membership. so since they are paying me to be there and giving me free reign over all of their utilities when I get off work i figure i should start lifting again.

after high school i dropped off going to the gym since i didnt play sports anymore ( stupid i know). and every time i would try to go back i would always overkill myself the first day. be so sore i was in agonizing pain for 3 days and never go back. i did this maybe 4 or 5 times.

so my question is what should my first few days consist of? a real light set just to get the soreness out of the way? say maybe if i did bench just do one set of ten with a plate on it? or is it better to just suck it up and do a normal routine :hs:

i will prolly follow this http://forums.offtopic.com/showthread.php?t=2148696

ease into it, if you feel your vagina ripping just back off and go for a hot-tub soak

Some people take advil to help with the inflammation but you could just do 1 set of all of your exercises for the first day.

Don't try to do all the exercises you could do when you were actually working out. Just do two sets with a weight you feel comfortable with. No matter what you're going to feel sore because you haven't been using the muscles in the same way. Easing into it is ok, but make sure you only do it for like the first week. You don't want it to become an excuse. Just make sure you stretch a lot before and after you work out, and the next day. Eventually it'll go away, just don't let it keep you from working out. Just work through it.

The first week of working out always makes me sore, but then ur body gets used to it. Just suck it up. But like they said too, dont go all out, but dont make it a waste of your time either.

    thanks for the post.
i understand there will be soreness and i wasnt trying to dodge it, rather just make it as minimal as possible. in the past i have walked in, gone all out, and then woken up in the middle of the night because it feels like my arms are on fire and would continue to feel so for 3 days.

i dont mind a little soreness i am just trying to avoid an absurd amount of it. i think i will follow your advice and go light the first day then pick it up.

I love muscle soreness.... after leg day I like to spend the rest of the afternoon just massaging my quads.

When I started and finally made it stick, I just waited until the soreness went down on its own enough for me to get right back into the gym.

Once your muscles get reconditioned you can get into a better routine.

    im talking extreme soreness.

ok the last time i went to the gym i did a heavy workout the first day. that night i woke up in excruciating pain all through my chest and arms. i couldn hardly lift them and when i tried to bend at the elbow it felt like hell.

I usually try to take it easy my first time back, but it never happens. Just go do the routine and deal with being sore. It will remind you to not take time off. ;)
