Hey guys, I'm just about to get my first car. Mom and pop said i got a 20000 spending limit give or take 2k. They want me only in a German car because its all they drive and they want it to be all I drive. So my brand choices consist of Audi, Mercedes, BMW and VolksWagen. I'm interested in a sporty coupe/sedan. I'd just like some user references from people that have driven these cars. (I like Audi s4, VW GLI, Mercedes CLK/CL 230-500, and BMW 330i or 3 series in general.)

    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the input. Anyone know what the deal is the 00-01 m5's? dependable at all? whats an av?

  7. Somehow I don't think the M5 is a good idea for a first car. Unless of course, your parents don't mind paying for all sorts of tickets and buying you a new car when you inevitably total it while showing off. For a first car you should get something decent, but not something that's going to get you in trouble. I'd look at nice E36 and E46s. Of course, if you are getting 20k from mom and dad I'm sure you don't care much about what I think and you'll go get something "cool." If you want something powerful, why not get a decent starter car, and learn to drive it well. Autocrosses and track days with the local clubs should be good for that. After a year or two you'll be a much better driver, then you can get something like an E39 M5.

I value your opinion greatly, thats why im posting this, to get ideas. Great call on the e36/46, incredible cars. Now, would a dealership sell that? or would I have to go to ebay to get what i really wanted?

  10. They are common enough that you should have no problem finding a private party sale. You'll get a much better deal than by going through a dealer. If you're not comfortable doing a mechanical check on the car, have it taken to a good local BMW mechanic. It might cost a hundred or two for a real thorough check, but you'll know you are getting a solid car, and you'll still end up way under what it would cost to buy from a dealer. You can probably find something nice for 10-15k. Tell your parents they should save the difference between your car and the 20k budget. Then when you are ready to step up to something faster in a while try to talk them into giving you the balance.

    A phaeton...well they're not 20k yet....but getting there pretty quickly

if performance isnt your thing, a Jetta 2.5 seems right nice...the I5 is nice enough.

I don't really know about these cars, they're sick and all, however they seem to be fitted towards the more mature individual. I know my parents were looking at them, its along the lines of a 7 series bimmer if i am not mistaken.

I am actually, after reading these responses and other posts leaning towards a bmw e36/e46, if anyone knows of a good private dealer/german importer in california within 200 miles of santa barbara that'd be awesome.

I've narrowed it down. I either want a BMW e36 or an audi s4. Both will be hard to track down. The s4 will be difficult to find in my price range but I really really want either.

Some reason why Volvo and SAAB aren't in the picture? It's not like they have shitty safety records.

If my parents wanted to buy me a Benz, I'd have no problem driving another German car. Until then, I'm going back to Japmobiles because they don't suffer from stupid shit breaking for no reason.

I have a 2001 9-3 and its a pretty nice car. Great ride, pretty quick, I'd say they are worth at least a look. Cheaper to fix than an audi too, at least around here.
