blacks are too compressed, whites are middle grey.

There should be seperation in the jacket/backpack area, and the snow should be white, not dirty, dusty gray.

post the orig., and i'll show you how i'd convert it....

so bring the blacks up a little and the snow should become more white and more seperation? I'll have to fool around with lightroom some more tonight

It looks like the WB was off before the conversion.

The only way I can tell there's a backpack is because of the JanSport sign. Too dark IMO. Where's the original?

for b&w my first thought is about contrast than about composition. (i.e. the previous comments about the whites being middle grey, blacks not being differentiated, etc.)

for composition, the cropping doesn't seem to be thought out. if you're trying to emphasize the body walking along, extend the right side of the canvas. or, crop into the foreground on the left to create more tension between the body and the center of the frame.

cut out the butt on the bottom, or show more of the legs...i might actually crop out a lot of the torso to emphasize the softness of the head against the sharp twigs/sticks in the background. the detail of the backpack isn't so necessary, i think, unless those details reveal something that i'm not seeing at first glance.

sorry if you're not asking for this kind of critique, but cropping plays a huge role in how an image is received.

No thats the kind of critique I was looking for I'm trying to get better with composition, I'd post this on POTN if I wanted an ego boost :mamoru:

I'll post the original tonight I think acab is right though wb was off before the conversion :o

    underexposed does not equal 'mood'.

it has zero meaning to us as viewers unless you show us why.
