I'm 19 and I'm looking for my first rifle to practice with at the range.. any suggestions? I'm thinking of taking a trip up to Wal-Mart and buy one for around $150.

I'm looking for an autoloader, no single shot rifles. Also any other advice you might have for a beginner would be appreciated. Thanks guys

The MSRP is horribly high, you can get a 10/22 at Walmart for around $160. And 500 rounds of .22 ammo is about $8, not sure about 50 rounds though, it's so cheap I've never bought that small of an amount.

Wow thats way cheaper than I thought, cool. :)

edit: I mentioned 50 rounds because I thought it was a lot more expensive, but if thats the case then I can buy a lot more than that.

that's understandable, I forgot how cheap it was until a few months ago, mostly because I haven't had to buy any for a long time.

I'm assuming I can buy a hi-cap magazine for this rifle? Or do I have to wait until that assault weapons ban is removed.

Yeah, you can get high cap mags. They'll be cheaper after the ban though.

Yeah, I got a Marlin magazine fed rifle when I was that age and it jammed a lot. Kinda wished I had gone for the Ruger, but I wasn't a fan of the woodgrain/camo look.

    The only Marlin I'd own would be a 1985G in .45-70. :o

I have nothing against Marlin, I just don't like any of their guns except their level actions. :dunno:

I was thinking this exact thing when I read his last post. I did this with my Colt Woodsman. I'm still waiting for a reply. I just sent the info Monday.

My grandpa did that with a pre-war model 70 he gave me. Apparently winchester sent him a paper with details on the rifle and all this stuff, I'm going to have to ask him to find it some day.

It's cuz he's 19, so he doesn't have a permit. Most states still have waiting periods and all that shit if you don't have a pistol permit and hence haven't gone through a badguy check.
