I've got a tattoo idea and I can't find pictures that are very close to what I want. When an artist draws your tattoo out, do you pay him for that, even if you don't like his interpretation? Do you try to find someone that's done something similar? I just don't want to have to pay $500 before finding an interpretation I like.

Some artist are differant. I've seen some that charge you somewhere around $50 to draw it up and tell you to come back later. Some will draw it up right there on the spot for free.

most will draw it up for a price, I think 20 is usual, and you can come back and see how you like it, comment on how you want to change it or go somewhere else, and if you like their drawing, the money you gave goes towards the tattoo price

My artist charged a $20 deposit to draw it up and when I go the tattoo he just minused $20 from the price.
