Sorry if this is a cliche thread here.

With my last regular camera meeting an unexpected end, I've decided to finally invest in a more serious one. Does anyone have any recommendations for affordable cameras for amateurs? I've had the Canon Rebel XTI recommended to me and was also curious to hear what y'all think.

if you can get the xti for next to nothing that'd be great. you could spend the money in your budget on one or two nice prime lenses, by the time you're proficient with that setup you'll know in what order to spend the rest of your bank account. ie: lighting, better lenses, new bodies, etc.
