I would love the ViewSonic 171B, but nobody has that - i can only find the VG171B. :(

    Dell has the VP171B i wanted. $525 - 15% = $447. Then using this - B40B7AA6AFBF - coupon code, i got it to $417 shipped (free 3-5 day shipping).

That's what I'm using (well, the black, not the beige), no DVI, but I'm fine with that. The picture is still great, and it definately able to handle games. I've played MoH, Call of Duty demo, Q3 (mostly to test out how well it handled fast movement), and it handled everything fine. Little to no ghosting.

Eh, does it really matter? Finding one with 20ms response time or lower, that's also DVI, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg is impossible :hs:

Yes it does. DVI = digital signals to digital, none of that digital to analog to digital back again conversion used with VGA cables. The LCD clarity of a DVI connection is much noticeably better.

If you think that doing a digital conversion to analog signals and then another conversion back to digital signals again is comparable to straight digital, then :ugh: :ugh: :ugh: :ugh: :ugh:.

Nec 1760v, That's what I have. 16 ms response time, no dvi, but it has a GREAT picture and handles games very well

    Viewsonic VP171B (Black) 17" TFT LCD Monitor > *

In the 17" gaming LCD market right now. DO NOT settle. Wait until one becomes available. If you buy something else, you will end up regretting your purchase. I have one and absolutely love it.

ETA at newegg for it to be in stock is 12/2/03.

I was able to tell the difference between DVI and RGB on my Viewsonic VP171B.

Find a LCD that receive both VGA and DVI. Test both signals on the same LCD and compare. The VGA connectivity will make the screen look less sharp and screen will look like it jitters very slightly and color may be off because of all the noise and signal correction from the analog to digital conversion.

Yes, I've tried this out and I can see the difference. Of couse, this test won't work on a shitty Mag or eMachine LCD or other cheapass throwaway LCDs.

Your argument that "the average user will NOT be able to tell the difference" may be true if that user can't see a difference between a 60Hz refresh from an 85Hz refresh rate on a CRT.

You SURE about that? In this situation, response time means everything.

I got mine for $500 total, so I wasn't sure if that was included in your 'average LCD' list.
