My advice? Don't give your camera away. When I upgrade to the 200 from my 70s, I'm gonna keep the 70s as an extra body. The 50mm f/1.8 is a sweet choice...got it about 3 months ago and I use it A LOT. Whats your budget for glass?

But he's going from a 300D to D200 -- Canon -> Nikon. hard to use the canon as a 2nd body if glass isn't compatiable...

You're right though, I kept my D70 around as backup to my D200.

Get the 18-70mm kit lens. It's a great walkaround lens, and the 18mm is suprisingly wide, while the 70 gives you decent reach. Also get a 50mm 1.8. It's cheap as fuck and takes some really nice photos, especially for indoor stuff. If you want to do the interior of boats, you might want to for something a little wider than the 18-70, but it's going to cost you. The 70-200 VR gets more general praise than any other nikon lens around now, but it's going to be really fucking expensive/hard to find. You can get yourself a pretty cheap non-vr version zoom lens if you can't afford teh 70-200, and if you're going to be using it in bright conditions anyways, it won't make THAT much of a difference.

    My two cents.

i would sub the 18-70 for the tamron 17-50 f/2.8.

and forget about the 50 f/1.8.

    I'd get a D200, a 18-200VR and a 50 1.8

you'll love the 18-200 with the VR, even in lowish light
and the 50 1.8 for portraits or indoors with low light or when you want depth of field effects
