Finally saw the new STAR TREK movie, and here are my thoughts. Spoilers, naturally.

It was awesome. They nailed every one of the characters. Especially the big three (Kirk, Spock, McCoy). You could almost believe you were watching young Shatner, Nimoy, and Kelley again.

    The story was great.

The villain and his motivations were 100x more believable than that faggot Shinzon from Nemesis.

It ended up right where it was supposed to, with the whole crew together.

The closing (Space. The final frontier.) was perfect. I was kind of bent that they didn't use star trek music, but figured they'd close with the opening.

I still don't like the alternate timeline stuff, though. You can't kill off Amanda and destroy Vulcan.

Which leads me to another observation and a theory I've devised:

There were a ton of references to Star Trek II. Ship full of cadets sent out for an emergency rescue mission, truth bugs, irrational genius bad guy, etc. And what's the major major major plot point in Star Trek II? Spock dies. In this one, Vulcan dies.

Now, in Star Trek III, they manage to BRING BACK Spock. So my theory is that in the next movie, they'll follow the hints they dropped, and bring back Vulcan, by fixing the timeline.

    :noes:

All in all, it far exceeded my expectations. I'll be buying the DVD.

    8.5/10

I don't know dick about Star Trek, but I really enjoyed the movie.
I really like Eric Bana, but his character in this movie was kind of boring and one dimensional.
Otherwise, I don't have any complaints.

I'm a huge trekkie and I loved it. Obviously I'm disappointed with the fact that they decided to reboot the franchise and leave our favorite history to rest, but if they were going to reboot it, I can't imagine a better way to do it. Not to mention I'd rather have a reboot than nothing at all, which is what Star Trek had turned into.

My gf not only knows nothing of Star Trek mythology, but severely dislikes Sci-Fi as a genre. I dragged her to see the new film and she really liked it. So overall I think the writers and J.J. Abrams did a fantastic job remaining as true to the canon as possible why bringing fresh life to a dying franchise.

    So long TNG. :wtc:

May I suggest Ian Banks' "Culture" series instead of nothing at all?

"skiffy" movies these days are all about extracting the max amount
of disposable income from those kids' pockets....

I thought the new star trek was the best movie I have seen all year.

No loss. The TNG movies were already getting stale as hell anyway.

I liked how they managed to explain the alternate origins of Star Trek in a true Star Trek manner.

I loved how they nailed McCoy dead on.

The only McCoy thing I didn't like was the "OMG WE'RE GOING TO DIE IN THIS SHUTTLE" bit. He's not afraid of everything, he's afraid of transporters. :uh:

in the next movie, in this new universe, Khan and Kirk will be best buds. Kirk will shout, "Khaan!!" as in, "buddy, how've you been?!"

 I'd never watch star trek again if they did that.
