My new iMac 20" came in yesterday and I got it up and running. My wireless network is working properly and so are my external devices.

    I got some questions though.

Now that I got my Mac up and running, what are some things that I need to take care of?

    Things I did so far:
I downloaded Windows Media Player for Mac
I downloaded Stuffit so I can open .rar, .zip and etc.
I updated my version of iTunes

Also, I have wireless Apple Keyboard & Mighty Mouse and yesterday my mouse acted up for about 3-5 min and wouldn't allow me to click around and navigate. I had to use my keyboard to switch through windows and navigate around. Another thing, this morning when I turned on my iMac and logged into my account, I couldnt see the bluetooth icon, airport icon, volume icon, day/time in the menu bar. I also couldn't use spotlight. I tried logging into a different account and it still didn't work. I then decided to restart the computer and it looked like it was gonna restart, but when after 25-30 seconds it didn't reboot, I decided to manually shut it off and turn it back on. When I turn it back on and logged in, everything was working fine.

    Any input is welcome,

    Thank You!

Read the sticky at the top of the Mac Shack. Loads of cool little programs and OS X alternatives to your Windows favourites.

Get flip4mac (again) and go to the divx labs website and dl the latest codec for divx movies.

Between Quicktime, flip4mac and the divx codec, my iMac plays pretty much everything in Quicktime.

Also, you can dl Onyx which is just a utility that does maintenance/cleanup on your Mac.

Don't forget to repair permissions before and after you install any program or update your software. It will save you headaches if you get in that habit.

    click on your desktop
click go on the top of the screen
    click "utilities" in the menu
double click "disk utility" to open it
select your harddrive on the left
click verify permissions, then repair permissions
do that every one and a while (once a month maybe) or after you install major programs, or if your computer starts acting funny. sometimes permissions get messed up and this will/attempt to fix it.
