So one of my best friends has been over in Iraq for a while now. He sent me an IM yesterday and gave me a rundown on how things have been. I've been trying to get his military mailing address for pretty much all summer and one of my friends finally came through. Now what do I send him? I'm looking to spend ~50 on stuff he might need/would be nice to have. Any ideas? The budget is flexible.. I mean shit.. we fucking grew up together. What can I send? Any big "no no's"? If you guys could shed some light on this I would be really appreciate it.

Candy, or any other snack fave that he can't get over there. Avoid chocolate.. it will melt like a mofo in .5 secconds ..

Any and all mail. Stock up on cards for those times when you can't think of much to say ( may sound a bit gay, but hearing your name at mailcall > *..)

as weird as it sounds, regular old fashioned snail mail. even if it's just a postcard. Stroker is right - hearing your name at mailcall > *

Also if you have pics of him, pics of his friends/family, pics of places he liked to hang out at, etc. He'll bore the fuck out of the guys he works with over there showing them pics they could care less about, but he will love them.

    I agree with Ranger.

I didn't really care too much about getting items (unless I really needed it!)
Letters from friends and pictures meant so much more.

dude, i always loved getting homemade cookies while on deployment. they always managed to stay fresh too. mom would send 2 or 3 tupperware containers full and i'd get to share them with my buddies.

oh, who doesn't love girlscout cookies? every year i got a case. theres like 10-15 boxes in a case. have him send one over when that time of year rolls around

Great Idea! I want to send him a ice package of just random stuff first and I'll be sending him postcards and letters after that.

    fucking :werd:

    hmmm

hard candies like jolly ranchers for himself and the kids, when i was in afganistan i probably went through 100+ bags of jolly ranchers just giving them out to kids :o

    batteries
    gold bond
    baby wipes
    the "softer" toilet paper

just the little things we use everyday in daily life will help so much

Thats a good idea. I'll prolly just send him a few small things (batteries/a magazine or two/hard candies/etc) and a letter asking what else he needs.
