Ordered it on Monday, and then after the new MacBook Pro was announced I cancelled my order.

Then I thought about it real hard. Lots of unanswered questions about that new MacBook, you know? Also, I didn't want to own a first revision.

So I called up MacMall (which I will NEVER do again), and ordered it again.

    Specs:

    15.2" with 1440x960 screen res
5.5 hr battery life (yeah, ok)
    8x Dual Layer DVD
    128 video
512 ram (upgrading to 1.5gb this weekend)
    backlit keyboard
80gig HD (Down to 60 now that I installed the entire adobe creative suite, macromedia suite and quark, office suiteand so on)

I'm really satisfied. I was a bit angry about no firewire 800, and the 4x single layer dvd drive on the NEWER model. Sure, the 256mb of vram would have been great, but you know what? Apple is supposed to come out with some neat things (they always do) and I dont want to be a guinnea pig to a first rev with compromises.

Anyway, I'm really happy with my purchase. it was $2000, and I am pleased with it.

Anything I should know? I had an iBook before this (that melted for the 4th time, so I neeed a new laptop)...

Any known issues with this model that I should keep on the lookout for? Any tips with the new OS Tiger that I should be aware of?

P.S. the backlit keyboard is THE SHIT.

I guess "DA BOMB" works too :mamoru:

I am an early adopter type as well, but not for an investment that I need to properly run a company/prgrams...I don't have time to find out if Photoshop and whatnot will be working properly, or if it will be a few months until they come out with a version that won't require Rosetta to run, and blah blah blah.

This is a stable machine, and thats what I need.Stability. Hopefully it more than pays for itself, it's fairly up to date, and then once it pays for itself, time to sell it, and then I can buy a later version of the newer ones.

    But...yeah...totally am satisfied with this.

I would like to have the latest greatest, but have always settled for the last of the previous generation. It saves money and they have been rock solid.

Well, I didn't save any money, the powerbooks were still at 2g's, but it's rock solid, and it's the zenith of what the perfect powerbook is/was...so I don't mind :)

But this thing is a beast, I love it.

Typing at night (I write a lot, and so the backlit it AWESOME), size, power...just love it LOVE IT

I can't stress that enough...it's been so long since I've been on a machine like this :)

I wanted to wait until the Macbook (non pro) came out, but I just bought an iBook and I'm thrilled. I just need an external hard drive, my apps are eating up my HD.

Yeah, 8x dual layer dvd burner

the NEW macbook has a 4x single layer dvd burner...

    :wtf: regression?

Apparently, if we wait long enough, the revision B MacBook Pro will have a nice floppy drive!

I got one a few weeks ago. I could have gotten the macbook pro with little hassle, but I rely on final cut pro and photoshop etc. too much to be dealing with first revisions :hs:

    I <3 my powerbook

apparently it's because the macbook is so thin, they had to get a thinnner dvd drive that only comes in 4x and single layer.

it was downgraded because the 4x is a slimmer enclosure, 9mm vs 12mm, and the macbook pro is a tad smaller.

I need to run the adobe suite at full speed. I can't gamble on if Adobe releases something sooner rather than later.

I like my purchase. I don't need to have the newest, fastest thing on the market. I do know this is good enough for me andthat I was happy with my purchase. Sure, it would be great to have a newer faster one, but something more stable and "final" is more for me.

Kind of like my Miata. I had a choice, a 1999 or a 1996. The 99 LOOKS nicer in my opinion, but I went with the 96. Why? Because they had from 89 to 95 to perfect it...99 was a new model and it was a first year...plenty of people have bearing problems and shit.

    So yeah...:)

I don't mind if a laptop is .1 of an inch bigger. Really, I don't.

    This is fine :)

i just got the powerbook too, should be here in a few days... at the school im going to its mandatory for all students to have a laptop, which kinda pissed me off at first but now im excited about, i was able to get it a little cheaper through the school. the main apple-tech guy at my school didnt reccommend the new macbooks yet, he said somethign about alot of programs not working on it yet, like they rushed the release of it or something

    update:

I've been working on this thing all weekend. Runs Photoshop and InDesign like a champ - much more stable than my ibook (Faster too) and my desktop PC at work (which is a top of the line Dell).

I'm loving this thing beyond loving...it's impressive. Also, compared to my old iBook, EVERYTHING feels better about this notebook.

I'm very satisfied, and I'm someone who is rarely satisfied...but I'm glad I made this purchase :)

now I'm on a top of the line powerbook with 2 gigs of ram :coold:

trying to think of other ways to pamper it :x:

That's awesome. I'm buying an ibook next month. I figure even an ibook would be a step of from this 900mhz pc i'm using. Ooooo and post some pictures of your shiny new toy.
