I'm looking for final project ideas for my programming class. I'll only have about 2 weeks from planning/design to turn in time, so I can't get too crazy with it. My initial thought was to create a client/server chat application. But our professor really wants us to do a game. He said something as simple as War would be fine. I could do that, but I kinda want to do something better than that. I was thinking of doing a Jeopardy type of game with only 1 player or maybe a slot machine. Anyone want to give some ideas?

I'm not too familiar with the rules of those games. But for what I have in mind about each, I think they are a little much for 2 weeks and my skills. ;)

Battleship (Man vs. Computer) was very popular for final projects in my programming classes this year. A buddy of mine did Connect 4, which was also a pretty cool one. I did a port scanner for mine this semester.

It's pretty cool actually. I'll post it up here actually if you want to check it out, but it's Winsock, so it would need some adaptation to run on Linux.

Edit: Put it in the Yahoo Briefcase, if anyone wants to check it out (it's called portscanner.zip in case you didn't guess that). You can ignore the specifications, design, and changelog files, those were the required non-code parts of the project, and they're pretty crappy.

how about bomberman w/ shitty gfx? :p in one of my classes, some kid made the simplest bomberman game possible (one-color square tiles and plain circles for the guys/bombs) and it was the hit of the class. people played it non-stop for weeks, because it was the only multiplayer game allowed in the computer lab (since it was student written.) :big grin:

They call our program IS, so I guess it's a mix of MIS/CIS. I'm in the Application Development track for my BS. I plan on doing the Information Engineering track for the MS though.

You know guys, I'm seriously considering just doing War. I really won't have a lot of time to work on this, esp considering I'll being doing a final project in my INFO 300 class too. Getting the project perfect is more important than trying to dazzle the professor. If it wasn't a summer class and I had about a month or so to work on it, I would do more. Ah well, an A is an A. :big grin:

When you say "War" do you mean the card game?

And quite honestly, I feel shitty about doing it (assuming he approves it for me). I know I can do better, but what's the point? I'll get an A in the class regardless of what I do for my final project. I think if this was during the normal semester and I had a month, I'd do something better.

The port scanner is up on my new website. It's the only link on the page, you can't miss it.
