A file was uploaded to me thru ftp. I dont want it anymore, but it refuses to let me delete it. It says its being used by another person or program. Its the same case with two movies which I downloaded off of winmx. Ive tried shutting down my ftp server, closing kazaa and winmx, even unplugging my internet connection, and ctrl-alt-deleting random things on my task list, but they still wont let me delete, move, or rename them. I havent had any problems except with these three movies in particular. How do I delete this crap?

ive already rebooted a few times.. doesnt work. wheres the msdos prompt in winxp? and can I even get to it with dos? since its in my shared folder, its a long file path, and theres two spaces in it

oh yeah I think this is relevant--I experimentally copied one of the files. The copy exhibits the same wierd "this file is in use" properties as the original, even though I tried to delete it immediately after copying it.

    never seen this before.

btw, right after your BIOS does POST and before WinXP starts booting, press F8 and select safe mode. maybe in safe mode you'll be able to delete :dunno:

damn I can't remmeber how to get dos in XP, but aint it F8 like 98?? I can't remmember, try F8...basically reboot the computer and after the BIOS screen press F8 real quick and see if you get the choice

as for the filenames, dont worry about it, just do a dir/w and then follow the names...example:

c:\program files will be called c:\progra~1\
it shrinks it down and put a ~#

you can also access spaced names by quoting them.

    i.e. cd "program files"

or cd prog* if you're lazy... :big grin:

I believe it's caused by Windows Explorer previewing the movies in that little window there. I seem to remember people had to turn off that preview for the lock to be discarded - but regardless, you should be able to do via DOS

:werd: Safe Mode + command prompt = files deleted

This sounds promising. All 3 files happen to be corrupt. I tested what you said, and sure enough, when I click on them, windows explorer tries to figure out a thumbnail for them but never comes up with one. All my other videos easilly come up with a thumbnail. Wheres the checkbox that says "preview movies w/ thumbnail"? I want to uncheck it and see if that was the problem before I try the safe mode/msdos techniques.

I just tried deleting that copy I made earlier. Safe mode didnt work at all (same error), but msdos did.

Try dragging it to the recycling bin in a seperate window, sometimes this works.
