    1a) 'Suga' Rashad Evans

If somebody had told you by the end of the year Rashad Evans would be the LHW champ, knocking out Chuck Liddell and Forrest Griffin in the process, you would have responded with laughter, or violence.

Rashad shocked the MMA world this year and is now the top dog in the most stacked division in all of MMA. His showboating drew the ire of many MMA fans. I think it's great. No different that BJ licking blood, or Jacare doing his crocodile shtick, or Rampage with the chains and the howl, or anyone else.

Rashad has some tough fights lined up for 2009 and I cannot wait to see them.

    1b) Gegard 'Young Vagabond' Mousasi

An amazing 6-0 record this year, 7-0 if you include his K-1 victory last night, Mousasi was the breakout star of the year. Victories over Denis Kang, Dong Sik Yoon, Melvin Manhoef, and Jacare helped him claim the DREAM 185 pound strap. This guy is for real, and might be the biggest threat to A.Silva at 185.

    3) Miguel Torres

3-0 in 2008, including a great war against Yoshiro Maeda and utter destruction of Manny Tapia. I will be tuning into each and every one of his fights in 2009.

    4) Thiago 'The Pitbull' Alves

Impressive wins over Karo Parysian, Matt Huges, and Josh Koschek has guaranteed Avles the next shot at the 170 pound title. Some people will rank him higher, however I feel him badly missing weight in a main event bout detracts from his accomplishments.

    Honorable mentions

Frank Mir - He caught a break against Lesnar, didn't win any fans on TuF, then put on one of the most jaw dropping performances of 2008 against one of the best HW's of all time. Debate will continue on if it was a case of how good Mir look vs. how bad Nog was, regardless I think he's earned the recognition.

BJ Penn - Dear BJ. You are an awesome fighter, but an incredible douche. Pull your head out of your ass and stay at 155 pounds. Two more title defenses in 2008 and you would have been first or second on the list. Instead you are fucking over everyone else in the 155 pound division to chase your personal dreams. That being said, great fights this year.

    Brock Lesnar
    - Becomes the HW 'champion' in just his 4th career MMA punch. Showed remarkable development from one fight to the next this year. Had he shown just a little restraint, he would be 4-0. Dude is for real.

    Hansen pounded him out.

To his credit, Aoki was weary from a much longer fight earlier that evening, but it was still a very definitive loss.

Yeah i would be kind of tired to if i just beat Caol Uno of all people to a decision victory (15 mins worth of fighting), whilst hansen got an armbar in the 2nd minute of his fight iirc.

    tough call

Has to go to a LW because its the most stacked up weight class. Id say Rampage...mostly because i think he got robbed off his title

Some others that had strong years:

GSP (Matt Hughes, Matt Serra, Jon Fitch)
    Anderson Silva (Henderson, Irvin, Cote)
    Machida (Soko, Tito)
    Arlovski (O'Brien, Rothwell, Nelson)
Fedor (Hong Man Choi, Tim Sylvia)
    Alvarez (Ebanez, Amade, Hansen, Kawajiri)
    Florian (Lauzon, Huerta, Stevenson)

These guys all had strong years. With the exception of Alvarez, they were all favored to win and did just that. Pretty routine year for GSP, A.Silva, and Arlovski.

Machida only fought once in 2008 (soko fight was last year) same with Fedor.

Alvarez had a fantastic run - but his loss to Aoki drops him off my list.

Strong in what sense? It's not like they posed real threats...

Yep, I had that list put together for a while and was waiting for K-1 dynamite to see who would win. If Alvarez had beaten Aoki I think he would have been my fighter of the year.

I think I'd have to give it to Mousasi.

It's more the manner in which Fedor dealt with them, particularly Sylvia. While Fedor should have fought at least 1 more time, he re-established himself after a period of inactivity.

Definitely Mousasi. 6-0 is a pretty incredible record in 1 year, and he did it against pretty tough competition.
