Well, I have been wanting to do this for a while, and after allot of searching and thinking I bought my first DSLR this week, got a canon XTI off of eBay, brand new, the only reason I chose eBay over amazon was that there was a microsoft live rebate for about 140.00 and I already had a rebate from buying a notebook earlier this year that I could apply. So, all in all I am only out about 250.00.

So, my actual questions are as follows, I think I am going to purchase an EF 50mm f/1.8, is this a smart decision. Is there some sort of lense guide that wil explain what each one does respectively. Any good reads on basic ideas behind shooting?

I know it is a gamble, but the seller had good feedback, and was papal certified for enough money that I can just return it if it turns out to be a bad buy.

I wouldn't recommend a 50 prime as your first/second lens.. everyone seems really pleased with the tamron 17-50.. that should make a great first lens.

a 50 1.8 is a great lens for learning what different settings do with, but i would never want it as my only lens.

The MP-E 65 makes me want to sell all my Nikon gear.

    I LOVE that lens.

luxury. basically a lot better glass, better build quality. Canon's finest line of lenses (not always true though, there are a few out there that are average at best)

No way in Hell would I have the 50 as my only lens on a crop body. Now, a 28 f/1.8 I could deal with.
