OT gun gurus educate me on how this works. You can walk into a walmart or something, get your background check out of the way in a couple minutes, and walk out with a rifle. But if you order parts to build one on the net it takes 6-8 weeks?

Anything with a completed receiver, even if there are no parts in it is "the gun" and must go through a FFL. If you have the tools to bend/weld/make your own receiver you don't need a FFL but then it needs to be fr your personal use, built by you, etc. Rifle parts or rifles ordered online will ship whenever they're available. If your state has a waiting period it will sit at your FFL's for that length of time before you can pick it up.

what exactly are the restrictions on FFL's? does being on probation for a nonviolent misdemeanor prevent it?

It doenst take 6-8 weeks, they simply ship whatever you order to a FFL and you pick it up from them and they do the background check that would be normally done face to face

You dont want to be caught with a gun while on probation anyway, they will max you out and you might get nailed with felony charges..

what happens if you have a gun already and then get put on probation, do you have to relinquish them to the county or something?
