ok bought a macbook pro about a 2 weeks ago and i'm finally getting the hang of it. however i don't know how to open several filetypes

    .rar
    .wmv
.avi (this was weird, none of my AVI files would play)
    .wma

is there a plug in for quickime or something else i can use to play these. and what program would you suggest for .rar's. OT is infatuated w/ rars and i have no way to open them.

    thank you in advance.

I use VLC for media the QT does not play. The AVI's are prolly DIVX, so get VLC and DIVX and they will work. I use RAR from the command line, but you might want to try this: http://www.unrarx.com/

.rar files are just another form of zip files. The newest version of Stuffit Expander will work just fine for those.

.wma are windows media audio files. iTunes should work just fine for those.

some .avi files just won't work for some reason. people encode them with the most fucked up code and some just don't port well. if VLC or MPlayer don't work, just ditch the file.

and flip4mac is a good download for playing .wmv in your safari or firefox browser.
