I've never considered the definition of freeware to require that it be closed source. From the name it ought to mean any software that can be downloaded free of charge :dunno:

Edit: Also, how is that article at all relevant? Free software, as it's used in that article, is also open source.

  4. I was just stating both sides of the argument...both can be used interchangeably these days.:)

i don't think "freeware" means closed-source, but I also do not consider linux to be "Freeware". In my mind, freeware is crappy software that the owner releases freely and has no business being on anyone's machine.

  6. Some of the best software I run on my PC is freeware ! Just to list a few off the top of my head: JV16Powetools, Firefox, Ad aware, Spybot, BHODemon, Net Transport, Spywareblaster, Multimon, Desktopsidebar, Filezilla, Media Player Classic, Crap Cleaner, CM Diskcleaner, ewido, RegscrubXP, XP Smoker, Wordweb, Webshots, Isobuster, PC Inspector File Recovery, etc etc Some of these are no longer freeware but I host the last freeware versions.

wow, you have a lot of crap on there. Some of those "cleaner" programs are on my shit-list as being ineffective or impersonators, and Webshots is spyware, itself....

    That'd be open source ;)

  9. Rather than throwing dirt on freeware without reason why don't you take a more mature approach and tell us exactly why you dislike each freeware. Grow up ! Those cleaners programs are genuine and clean out temp files and malware. No one except yourself will disagree with me on this.

Here's what crap cleaner cleans (quote from website):

Internet Explorer Cache, History, Cookies, Index.dat.
Recycle Bin, Temporary files and Log files.
    Recently opened URLs and files.
Third-party application temp files and recent file lists (MRUs).
Including: Media Player, eMule, Kazaa, Google Toolbar, Netscape, Office XP, Nero, Adobe Acrobat, WinRAR, WinAce, WinZip and more...Advanced Registry scanner and cleaner to remove unused and old entries.
Including File Extensions, ActiveX Controls, ClassIDs, ProgIDs, Uninstallers, Shared DLLs, Fonts, Help Files, Application Paths, Icons, Invalid Shortcuts and more... Backup for registry clean.
This software is completely Freeware and contains no Spyware or Adware.

Absolutely anyone who knows anything about PCs will know about Spybot and Ad Aware....enough said.

Webshots is not spyware ! They even have a no spyware/adware policy:
    http://www.webshots.com/html/spyware_policy.html

    Neither http://research.pestpatrol.com/ nor http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/search.html
detect any spyware. Perhaps Webshots and other freeware authors should sue the pants off you for defamation !
