GUN Father won't let me own a weapon, advice?

Here's the deal. I'm very into weapons, in part because I enjoy shooting them from a sport/fun factor, but also I believe in protection.

Currently I'm still a Junior in college, about to turn 21. I'm asking permission to get at least a permit, not even the physical weapon, and both parents say, "Not under this room. When you get your own place you can show us your whole armory. We don't like guns and believe in them."

Soooooo a clear conflict of interest.

    Procedure?

Well I would love to at least take some safety courses, possibly get a permit, and wishful thinking is actually own one but store it elsewhere?

I just turned 19, I live by myself, I just bought a shotgun. My room, my rules, no one tells me to do shit.

Its not worth the hassle, just wait a year. You're supposed to be broke and spending the little money you have on cigarettes, alcohol, and women anyway.

Their house their rules. Don't disrespect your parents like that. Just do as they wish, as soon as you're on your own you can buy whatever guns you want. I was in your same shoes since I was 16, both of my parents were very anti and I never even got the chance to shoot a gun until I was 21 and living on my own.

I see nothing wrong with taking a saftey class or introduction to firearms now. Most firearm academy's have rentals, so there's no need to buy one. To me, if they know you are going to buy guns as soon as you move out, they would want you to be as safe as possible with them.

But like others have said, it is their house, and since you live with them and (I'm assuming) they pay for school, you should probably listen to them.

If your of legal age I wouldn't even ask about the permit. Buying a gun when living with them I wouldn't do. The permit is your business though.

they didn't say anything about classes. take them.

My parents were the same way. Maybe not quite as bad, but pretty close.
I went against them and got a gun anyway. I did a damn good job of hiding it for the longest time.
Didn't last forever though. My mom found the gun in my safe the one time I forgot to lock it. Damn.
They held onto it the rest of the time I lived there. Got it back when I finally moved out.

Looking back now, I say it's not worth disobeying them, regardless of your age.
They can make your life hell if you do go against them and do it anyway. Stay in their good graces and just wait.
Maybe get the permit, I doubt they'd kick you out for that... but definitely wait on a gun.

My parents were the same way but with motorcycles. I just came riding up on it one day and they didn't say shit.

My dad was cool though, went down with me to get my first handgun and got me a Ruger 10/22 when I was 13

Yeah I did the motorcycle thing too. They didn't find out until I was in the hospital.

My brother is in the same situation. Do what they ask. Save your money and buy one after you move out.

Sucks, but yeah, their house their rules. You might want to try a compromise, talk to your dad and see if he will at least go to a range that rents guns with you and go shooting with him. If he likes it you just gained an ally, at worst you got to go shooting.

    :ugh:

let me put it this way: In CA, the only "permit" ever needed is the easy-as-fuck Handgun Safety Certificate.
    Otherwise, no permit necessary.

Oh and yes, parents' house, parents' rules.

Lots of states require you to apply for a permit to buy firearms... mostly handguns though.

if all you want is the permit and lessons, what is stopping you? You're an adult, you can do what you wish, as long as it is not in their house. I fail to see the issue of a permit and lessons. How would they even know? :dunno:
