fans for older processors

    i have a AMD Athlon XP 2500+. im looking to get rid of this loud ass fan/heatsink combo for something much quieter. any suggestions on whats nice and quiet? this thing is loud as fuck and i can hear it while on the other side of the house. id like to get something that you cant tell its running

    This is a nice cooler and runs about ~$30 and has a 92 mm fan.
    Main rule of thumb is that the larger the fan, the quieter it's going to be. That's not always the case, but the larger fans usually spin at slower speeds and thus produce less noise.

    This one is very inexpensive and seems to have a low dB rating and should do an adequate job of cooling your Athlon.

    This one is more expensive but includes a lot of bells and whistles.
    It is quiet at the slow speeds, but pretty loud at the highest speeds.

    Get a copper heatsink. They conduct heat more effectively than aluminum ones. Heatpipes are nice too, but they generally require cases that have an exit vent conveniently positioned where the heatpipe's radiator will sit in order to be effective.
