Try using a program that can read the media at a slower speed. Might help you recover. You try on multiple machines? What's the file format on them?

That sucks, but did you check the DVDs worked after you burnt them and before you deleted the originals?

I'm so anal about backing up. I use SyncToy to run everything off my hard drive with all my images, work, software, games and documents to another one making a complete mirror image. It then copies my entire work folder onto my external wd mybook and my entire work folder to my dropbox to be uploaded offsite.

Aint no way I'm losing any work again :)

And I backed them up using Nero Backup. I think that's the problem -- when I simply copied files using Nero File Copy, they seem to work fine.

What's so good about them? I know nothing about them. I take it its not just a big external HDD the way people go on about them?

So if you have 4 separate drives it combines it to make a single one? So if a hard drive fails the data is spread across the other disks - what happens if your drives are full and cannot recover the data from the dead disk? Seems risky.

£430 from amazon - no thank you. From what I can see, buying a bunch of 300GB hard drives for £35 a piece and using a syncing program is a far greater solution for keeping my files safe.

You have a game system like a PS3 to throw them in? I know the PS3 can rip right from the disc to its HDD.

All the drives are redundant so if any one drive fails, the info is still there and all you have to do is throw a new drive in and it will rebuild the array and give you the redundancy again. Its very safe and much safer than keeping something just on DVD or on a single disk.

The advantage over mirroring to multiple disks is that you get more data on it than you can with mirrored drives.

For instance, if you use 4 750 gig drives and mirror them, you only get 1.5 terabytes of space. With a Drobo or other RAID system you get 2.25 terabytes of space for the same number of drives.

Ah but the drobo is so god damn expensive, I'd just buy more hard drives without a drobo.

I've had that issue before, so I always check my DVD as soon as I'm done burning it before I delete anything.
