i've lifted on and off for a couple years, but want to get more serious about it. It's been 6 months or so since i've lifted so I plan to do a 3 day/week full body workout to start before switching to a 4 day (or so) split. First is this a good idea?

Now this is what my planned full body workout would be:

3-4 ab excercises covering all the groups
Squat 3X8 reps (may do leg press instead, due to bad back/knees)
    Bench 3X8
    Pulldown 3x8
    Military press 3x8
    upright row 3x8
    tricep pushdown 3x8
    leg extension 3x8
    bicep curl 3x8
    leg curl 3x8

would this hit all the major muscle groups I need to build before doing a split?

also how long should i do this sort of routine before splitting and focusing in on muscle groups more?

how about the reps/sets? look good?

    thanks for the advice

why do you need a full body workout before you can go to a split?

just start off with a 2day upper and lower body split.

here is a good routine you cna do 3 times a week and will help

pull-ups - as many as you can till you reach a total of 50
crunches or reverse crunch 5x25 or suicide sets
squat 4x12 or dead lift 4x12
