If you want something just better than your P+S, go with the entry level D-SLRs, you'll be very happy with that. Other cameras get more expensive (min 1000 with a lens).

    Nikon
    D60
    D40

Canon Rebels (I dunno their models)

Either of these bodies: 20/30/40D (Image Quality(IQ) comes more from the lens than anything)

All around shooting + in doors

    I suggest a Tamron 17-50mm 2.8

    "all around + outdoors"

    Tamron 28-75 2.8

I believe the 28-75 does macro also.

didnt someone just buy a 30d for like $300-$400? match that with a tamron 17-50 f2.8 or the 28-75 2.8. That should be about 600 give or take 100

Is the lack of the AF motor on the D60 really that big of a deal?

I thought you just bought one?

    30D + Tamron 17-50mm

There's a guy on POTN selling a 20D and bag + Tamron lens for $500.

ah great, here we go. Get this, get that...get what YOU want. Go hold and shoot with different camera bodies and pick the one that fits YOU. All these questions do is bring out the sackriders telling you to get the camera THEY like in your price range.

Can anyone make up their own minds these days?

he wanted us to tell him what to get. Nothing wrong with that, but he does need to do his own research as to WHY we choose what we do.

I got one that supposedly has 6,000 clicks for $400 shipped

Hard to beat that deal honestly... used tamron 17-50 f2.8 = $300 BTW

Would a 5 year old camera like that really be a lot better than a new D60 or something similar?

Im not sure what the canon equivalent is to the D60, but I would take a used 20d/30d over a new canon xs/xsi

The 20D is a great camera. The 30D is even better. The 40D is even better yet but not $300 better IMO.
