External HDs - Meant to stay on all the time?

    Most of the newer ones (last year or two) will go into a 'sleep state' where they will spin down the HDD and wait for you to access it either through a data transfer or plugging it into your computer.

    I have one. Leaving it on all the time kinda slows the boot time by a few seconds. Mine's use for backup so I turn it on when I need to.
