=ok, been looking into an external HDD setup and alot of the cases on newegg has an AC adapter, will the HDD work without the AC adapter plugged in, such as using it with a laptop in a car or something?

If you use a 2.5" notebook hd a lot of the drives can be powered off of 2 USB 2.0 ports. I got mine off of Newegg for $18 and a 80GB 5400 drive for another $80. Swapped the drive out of my notebook and used the old drive in the enclosure.
