I formatted my HD on my mac, and I am able to read and write files from my old pc at my parents house, and it's about 4 years old. When I had it formatted in windows, I was unable to write files from my mac. So if your friend's PC is somewhat new, you should be able to write from it I've written from many different PC's on my Mac formatted HD.

    I have a 300GB Maxtor USB drive.

I had the same issue, so here is what I did, and it works.

Connect the drive to your mac machine and run Disk Utility
    Select the Disk
    Select the Erase tab
Select MS-DOS File System from the Volume format drop down

(You may have to create a new partition, can't remember)

I have a 300GB partition that I can w/r in Mac and WinXP

Yea I had the same problem, but since my drive was only 160GB, I didn't have to worry about the limited FAT capacity. :hs:
