Im in the market for an external hard drive to free up some laptop space.

What should I be looking for? Who makes the best?

Seagate is the best hard drive available. If they don't have any external models, and if you don't feel like buying a do-it-yourself kit and putting your own external drive together using a regular Seagate drive, then buy one from Western Digital instead.

And it works like a regular HD, correct? You can move files, access files, etc from both HDs easily?

Yes. An external hard drive is just an internal hard drive stuck inside a pretty box with a circuit board that converts the IDE plug on the back of the hard drive to a USB or FireWire plug on the back of the pretty box.
