im getting a laptop soon with a 100 GB pata hd, and i wanted to get like a 200-300 GB external hd to store mostly music/games/movies. any recommendations on hard drives? also if i got a sata external and i have a pata internal would there be any kind of conflicts with the two (i assume not but you never know). ill also most likely be running the external off usb 2.0

Buy whatever drive you want and then buy a compatible USB Enclosure. The true external drives are always expensive especially if you want one that big. They do make SATA enclosures, but I think they are still kind of pricey. I have a SATA drive in an IDE USB enclosure and bought a SATA to IDE adapter on Ebay and it works fine.

    There shouldn't be any conflicts.

FYI, 250GB SATA drive for $101 shipped at http://www.monarchcomputer.com/

yep. make sure your external HDD is USB/2 (or FireWire if you have it).
