I bought a hard drive case for my old laptop hard drive (2.5", 10gig),
i installed it and plugged it into a computer with Win XP, it went through the whole found new hardware stuff automatically and the little window by the clock said new hardware installed and ready to use . . . . . . .

    The Problem:

When i go to my computer it doesn't show up.
I went into the device management thing and it shows the EHD there and tells me it is wokring properly.

Anyone know how i can access the files on this EHD?
    Or what i'm doing wrong?

    TIA :x:

Edit: i tried it on 2 different computers and the same thing happens, one computer had Win XP, and the other has Win XP Pro.

    is the drive formatted?

  3. Oh, I forget - something to do with making the partition BASIC & Active.

    In computer management.

It's definitely something to do with that, I'm sure - just forget the details. Getting rusty after being out of the IT game for awhile.

It's not a system boot drive, so it should not have anything to do with being active or not.

I would see if you could format it.

If you go back to manage, has the drive been given drive letter? It could be a conflict.

Before i pulled the HD from my laptop it was running Win XP on it, but then one day my wife used the computer and from that point on it said "Operating System not Found" when i turned on the computer.

I tried to reinstall XP but i couldn't get the computer to boot from the cd, I tried 2 different win XP cds and a win 2000 cd and none of them would boot.

I bought the case to see if i could pull any of the files off the HD and then i was gonna reformat it and use it as a portable EHD to transfer files around.

I was thinking there might be a conflict somewhere.
I didn't see any way to reformat it

Well is a drive letter assigned to it in disk management? If not right click on it and you should be able to give it or change the drive letter. Make it Z or something out of the way to avoid a drive letter conflict.

it shows up in computer managment under disc drives but it shows the name of the HD not the assigned letter, it also shows up under universal serial bus controllers as a mass storage device.

There's no assigned letter, so there should be your problem. You can right click on it and should be able to give it a drive letter.

The EHD is not connected in those pics but like i said above, it shows up under disk drives and i can go to the properties of it but i don't think there's anything that i can change.

If all you want to do is grab files off the drive, you could always purchase a 2.5" to normal IDE harddrive adapter. I got mine for 10 bucks. A little expensive if you ask me, but it certainly does the job.

It just plugs into the laptop's harddrive then the other end goes to an IDE cable and a molex connector for power. After that it behaves just like a normal harddrive.

Well yeah, in the sence that it lets you access files from a laptop harddrive. But this is much more direct. There's no stupid buggy little controller chip on it to turn it into a USB device or anything, just straight pass through to the IDE cable.

And hey if it doesnt work just bring it back n say hey this stupid thing didnt work gimme my money back.
