So I took my external from my Imac to my windows laptop and somewhere in between it won't recognize on either machine anymore... It throws up an error that makes it sound like the device has been corrupted bc I didn't eject properly... What can I do to get my information off of the hard drive or even make it start reading properly again...

Data recovery apps are the way to go at this point. I won't make any suggestions as to which ones (there is one that works very well with failing drives and drives that won't mount) as I am bias to one and the general crowd on this board seems to just pirate everything so why bother. Good luck.
