I have a wd 320 external hd i bought about 2 years ago and the other night when i went to get some music off of it, it was showing it in my computer but said that it wasn't formated, i've tried unplugging and restarting, i tried running disk check on it but it won't run it just shuts down after i click run on it, i really wouldn't care about reformatting but i have all my pics and music from the last few years that i can't get back on it. Any suggestions would be great.

if it was me, i would put it out of the case and attach it as a slave. then run getdataback for ntfs and attempt to grab some stuff
i've had great results with that in the past

you could also run spinrite on it, although it won't fix your partition tables. its meant to physically fix the hard drive

last resort - throw it in the freezer and hope for the best
