So I dropped my 80GB smamsung external HD this morning and when i plug it into a usb port, the light on the HD comes on like normal but the computer doesnt register it and the HD makes a ticking noise.

Any ideas what is wrong and if it can be fixed?

The only things you can fix yourself are:

    1. Loose wiring connection.
    2. Broken circuit board (buy a new case for the HDD).

Other than that, you're screwed -- you'll have to send it to Samsung for service or hire an HDD rescue company if there's vital data on it.

No vital data, I just want my HDD back :wtc:. I'll just send it to Samsung.

    Cheers.

it's fucked, try putting it in your freezer and then connecting it directly to your ide channel, might work

The freezer? What will that do? Make the air denser so the reader heads float more easily?

Before you try the freezer thing, put it in a ziplock bag.

    And yes, ticking=no more HD.
