This is my laptop with XP Home on it. The only thing that I can think of is the other night I ran defrag and AVG scanned the HDD, and since then explorer will not run correctly. It will start if I call it, crash, start again, then crash and stay down. As odd as this is, the other thing is that the other user profile (my wife's) runs fine - no problems with explorer. This windows install is several years old, but format/reinstalling is out of the question. Any ideas?

I do fail, not enough sleep. My apologies.

    For your troubles, try this:

Administrative tools>System Config>Services. Click the "Hide all Microsoft..." box. Hit disable all and restart. Then from there and the process of elimination, figure out what stupid service is causing the problem. That should help. I kept having explorer crash a while back, that fixed the problem.

Tried your way Kasumi Chan, and explorer still crashes. Managed to get Nero running, backed up all my wife's stuff to DVD, and I'm running system restore now. I'll be sure to set a restore point right away (like I should have to begin with).

Go into the 'Manage Add-Ons' with IE and disable them all. Then re-enable them one at a time and find out if any of them are causing the problem.

I had the same thing happen to me on XP w\ IE6 and it turned out one of the Helper Objects was causing the problem.

format/reinstall should never be out of the question.

You most likely have a recovery partition on the laptop, so even if you don't have the windows disc, you can still start over.

iexplore.exe would run fine, it was explorer.exe that would crash at random.

Yep, finally figured out today how to get the recovery partition to work, all is well now. Updating XP and getting rid of Compaq/HP's junkware FTL.

Sorry it didn't help.:\ That's just the standard fix for windows crashes, doesn't solve them all.
