    What I'm planning on taking:

    Of the things I own:
    D70
    18-70 f/3.5-4.5
    1 Battery + Charger
    Sandisk Ultra II 1 gig
    Manfrotto 190B Pro
    Manfrotto 488RC4 Ball Head
    USB card reader
    20gig Dell DJ

    Plan on buying:
    Sandisk 1 gig (regular speed)
    Extra battery
    CD-R's and DVD-R's

The plan is to keep it relatively light and not take a laptop with me. I'm staying with family alot of the time, but there will be an 18 day span where I don't have access to a computer. I wanna transfer photos from my CF cards to the DJ (it acts as a mass storage device if hooked up to a comp). As a backup burn CD's or DVD's as well. Hopefully I can acomplish all this at internet cafe's...if not I guess I'm shooting alot lower resolution :noes:

Any other ideas as to what else to bring/not bring?

going with only the kit lens?

think that will be enough? at least get a fast prime lens just in case you want to take city night shots :dunno:

I don't really own a fast wide lens...which I could see being useful inside churches etc.

I could take an 85 1.8, but I don't know when I'd really use that :dunno:

I'm doing close to the same thing. Going with family and I just recently got a 20D :noes:

Anyways, I've been reading alot on the Fred Miranda forums and it seems like the thing most people who say 'if you have to take one lens' it's usually a wide angle they recommend. I think I may be taking a plunge and getting the 10-22mm canon lens soon.

This thread in particular helped me make up my mind, lots of good info.

outpost.com has the wolverine 6in1 harddrive for like 150. The p-2000 is by far the best of the bunch, but at 500 its pricey and hard to find in stock. I have a Delkin Picturepad 20gb that works alright, but only allows about 2 gigs of transfer per battery

You should probably buy some third party batteries, unless you're rolling in cash, for your D70. :o

If memory serves me, the DJ can only be used as a hard drive for files if the software is directly loaded on the comp. I have one, but have never tried putting files on it. I would investigate that first, other wise you'd be shit out of luck. Also if you're bringing the dvd's, make duplicates of all your files, don't want a HD dailure from travel or being stolen to ruin all your memories.

If you can get a way of uploading the files to a storage space online would be a good idea too

it doesn't have a cf slot if thats what you thought I meant :dunno:

it could work but only if the comp has the software. If he brings his own than its all good, if he relies on internet cafes he's screwed

i realize that, thats why I said he had to HAVE DELL'S software to be able to do it. Its not a plug and play device for files according to the manual. I don't think a lot of internet cafes would like new software added :ugh2:

is it someone's time of the month :dunno: :fawk: :hugot:

i wish it was plug and play, and who knows, maybe theres a firmware update or something, but when I bought mine in sept when they were chhep as a $2 hooker, the manual said you needed Dell Explorer to make it work as a hard drive.

i can verify the DJ drivers thing when I get home tonight.

If not USB HD enclosures are like $30 so I can just yank my desktops HD and take that with me.

As for more lenses, I guess I could take something wider and faster, but I'd have to buy it so any not so outrageously priced recomendations? :o

And no selling things...I usually keep what I buy :hs:

id recommend the 17-55 2.8 but I guess that would go in the outrageously expensive category

the kit lens should be fine. a 50 1.8 would be good indoors. and i'd upload to an online file storage. imagestation, adorama, webshots, etc. cd's can get broken in your bag

50 1.8 is also a very cheap one, that would be a good choice

A 35 or wider fast lens might be nice...I don't really see the 50 1.8 being useful and the 70-200 is a huge lens.

The 17-55 2.8 would be nice, but it's also quite big and as I don't own it, it would be pretty expensive. The extra 35% of light on the wide end would be kinda nice though :hs:

Does anybody have experience with internet cafe's in europe and what resources they have available? Can I use one as a way of talking to two different USB device's? Do they have DVD burners installed?

how about a 28 2.8 that's a very small lens and should help with the church areas?
