I flew out of Germany in August 2008 (4 years active duty, 3 years and 2 months spent in Mannheim). I spent some time on terminal leave, looked for work, didn't make much progress, and then swore into the PA Guard w/o a break in service in September. I sat on unemployment for a brief time, which was  Apparently PA thinks I made $50k last year, so I was collecting a good chunk of change for a bit.

I am now on long term orders working at 3/166th Regiment on the Ft. Indiantown Gap (NCO Academy, school code 1012). I started working as admin for Battle Staff and 1SG course, but now I am working as a WLC instructor. I began back in early October and my orders take me out until May. I will be splitting time between BSNCOC/1SG admin and WLC instructor, but mostly as WLC instructor I believe.

I will be attending both classes to get my "8" identifier in April, at which point I will be a full, legit SGL. I reclass to 25B in May on Tobyhanna, which will finish up in August. After that, the sky is the limit. I want to spend at least a few more years as an NCO, so I am going to work to get a solid AGR job.

I plan on retiring in the guard, and I am still debating whether I want to go officer/warrant or not.

    Questions, comments, concerns?
    This concludes my brief.

I do not know what you are looking out of this post. But I do know, keep on rocking. Keep it up. Sounds good what you are doing. Civilian life is not what it is all cracked up to be. I've applied to a bunch of PA jobs but have not heard anything back.

why 25B? Do you not want to be 94E or do you have to reclass?

I have always been a "computer guy" and this is a great opportunity to get some training. Bumping up to a TOP SECRET clearance will be nice also. There are a ton of technician jobs in the state for 25B if I need to go that route.

    :mamoru:

I feel like I abandoned the barracks section, so I just wanted to give an update. If anyone doesn't care, then just move on :wavey:

Being back in the states has been weird, for one, and job hunting is an entire different animal. I did a phone interview that was just bizarre.

Just saw this. I am transferring to a Civil Affairs unit next month. Hello Airborne School. Just got the official word Tuesday. After that, I will look for a AGR position close by.

Why do you recommend bailing on the reserves? I want to leave USAF AD when my contract is up, but I haven't decided if I want to do reserves or the guard.

I think I just might. I have to wait one year. My contract ends March 2010. I don't think 10k for another 3 yrs in the reserves will cut it. I rather do my job full-time then just for a weekend. I do miss work.:ugh2:, Damn, these Mexican genes.

My father, who has never given me bad military advice, strongly advised me to stay away from the Reserves. They are the red headed step children of the federal government. Their units are manned poorly, the majority of their equipment is outdated and beat up, and when it comes to a military career, there will be more opportunities available in the guard.

If you are going the distance, 6 years will be the sweet spot and should yield some sweet cash. Fuck it, look around at different jobs, speak with a guard recruiter, see what is hot, maybe get a reclass out of it too? Depending in the situation, you might be able to work some more stabilization...

Research a potential job you might like.
Talk to a recruiter to see if that MOS is available somewhere you want with your rank.
