So I picked up an old Imac with no os. I try to put tiger on it and everytime it begins installing I get the error " error instaling operating system"... How can I check the hard drive for errors without an OS on it?

does it have a firewire port? try targetdisc mode or something. also, boot the os from a cd.

Instead of running the installer go up to the menu and you can run Disk Utility from the boot disc.

It won't let me format the drive. It says errors on disks.

I'm not telling you to format. You run Disk Utility from the boot disc and check the disk from there.
