Okay, you guys are going to have to explain the whole brown+black=death to me. I talked to my friend who is an art major and she said that from an artistic perspective there is nothing wrong with it. So is it because they're both dull colors? Too plain? Or...

I don't get it. Please explain and don't forget to vote :)

Yea, but then that can be said about any color combination. Blue and white looks good in many contexts, but it can look hideous as well depending on what shade of blue is used. So why not be weary of that combination? Is it that blue and white work together a higher percentage of the time? What is it about black and brown that makes it different than pairing any other two colors?

blue and brown are the two hardest colors to pair with black

I feel like I'm running in circles :run:

To me, black is so neutral that it really doesn't bother me what shade of whatever color you pair it with as long as it's not some outrageous shade :dunno:

i love it when it's done well/right. i agree with oliver that it depends on the shape of brown, and it also texture/weight of the fabrics would be taken into consideration too

to me, navy/black are much harder than brown/black combo

I think its hard because they're so close. Brown can look black in certain lighting and it makes it seem like you didn't know what you were doing. Same with navy.

i can't think of any examples off the top of my head, but i know i've seen some examples where some brown shoes have been ok with a black suit. if you have a good sense about it, it's possible to pull off.

but usually, if you see brown shoes on a black suit, it just looks off. it's like the brown shoes from the navy, khaki, or gray suit wandered its way over to the dark side and is screaming out to passersby to please help him back home. a black suit just has those black elements that are quintessentially part of the outfit that when you cross over other colors, you'd sure as hell better know what you're doing. kind of the same way you don't want to cross red and green together to avoid looking christmasy in the middle of july, it's just better to play it safe and reach for a trusted combo.

but basically, to put brown shoes with other things, keep that shit dark. you don't want really light browns with black pants or navy pants. that would look weird.

    or just play it safe.
