Durham police officer arrested and suspended over illegal gun salesDurham police officer arrested and suspended over illegal gun sales

A police officer was arrested over the selling on of guns that had been handed in by the public to be destroyed, police said today.

The officer, a long-serving member of the Durham Constabulary, was arrested in connection with the sale of more than 100 shotguns to new owners.

A two-month police investigation found the guns in question, which had been handed to police by licensed gun owners who no longer wanted their weapon, had effectively vanished from the police registration system and found their way to new owners.

Police said all the missing firearms had now been recovered, and stressed that all the guns had been sold to "respectable members of the community" who were all licensed gun holders.

The investigation began after a burglary at a farmhouse in North Durham, in which a .22 rifle was taken.

In the course of their inquiries, the owner of the rifle told officers that he had bought the gun from Durham Police.

Following an inquiry from the force's Professional Standards department, under the supervision of the Independent Police Complaints Commission, a firearms licensing officer was arrested.

The 46-year-old, who has nearly 29 years of service with the force, was arrested and questioned over allegations of malpractice in a public office, theft and the forgery of documents.

He was released on police bail pending further inquiries and has been suspended from duty, a spokesman confirmed today.

Chief Superintendent Ian Macdonald said: "Following allegations of maladministration raised against a police constable employed as a firearms licensing officer, a detailed inquiry was launched by Durham Constabulary.

"That inquiry is ongoing and being supervised by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

"As a result, it has been established that a number of weapons, the large majority shotguns handed in by members of the public for disposal or destruction, have been sold on.

"Our investigations, which were launched immediately, have been running since early February.

"We have established where all the guns have gone and can confirm they went to licensed shotgun certificate holders or firearms certificate holders - all respectable members of the community previously security vetted by the force.

"The Pc involved, who is 46 with nearly 29 years service, has been arrested, questioned and released on bail pending completion of our inquiries.

"He is currently suspended from duty."

I'm sure it does and not sold to 'respectable members of the community'. I'm surprised they are going so light on him must be cause he's a cop, a commoner would of been shackled up in the tower of london by now.

Yeah, it works for creating a entire "black" market that thrives on the provision and sale of illegal firearms. Just like prohibition, drug bans, etc; All this crap does is provide politicians temporary grounds for posturing, at the cost of the common man now having to deal with another breed of gangster.

Only the police should have guns.

If anyone is going to sell guns on the blackmarket, it should definitely be the police.
