The whole thing started with the fact that she's not legally allowed to work outside of her field of study, which doesn't give her any options, because she is not an American citizen. So why not marry her?

But it's spun into something else. I want to marry her - I would want to even if not for the convenience.

Ironically, for the very reason that she views the notion of a contractual relationship askance, I don't think there's any other girl in the world (or at least any I will likely meet) who I would want to marry aside from her. No one else would take it the same way that we are - a romantic act of the moment rather than a commitment to the future.

You guys may recall that she and I used to propose to each other every once in a while. It felt good to do that. It feels good to do this.

We've downloaded a basic prenup and, basically, nothing has changed - except that we have this crazy opportunity to celebrate ourselves in a way that people will GET.

(Or maybe they won't get it entirely, but they will get more of it.)

I think I will still call her my lover, though. Confused? Me too!

Anyways this is one of the most awesome things that could've happened. What a turn of events.

    Congrats!

And I do think you should still call her your lover - just maybe Mrs. Lover now? :mamoru:

    Congrats

You guys going to do an actual ceremony or just go down to city hall? Exchanging rings? Will you continue to have an open relationship?

Sorry if this has been posted before, but what field is she in that she needs to be an American citizen to work outside of?

Ok so you would want to marry her and all that, but really the reason this whole thing came about is because she's not an american citizen and she wants the benefit of working outside of her field.

That's great you're happy about it but me personally, I wouldn't want the foundation of my marriage to be based on the fact that my wife really wanted to have the work benefits of an american citizen, oh yeah, and that love thing rolled in there somewhere I think too.

city hall first, then an after-dinnery/party with close friends.

    I think so.
Yes, we haven't made any new agreements or anything like that.

that's because of what marriage means to you, and what marriage does not mean to me.

the marriage doesn't change the relationship in any way. it's a romantic instant, not a long-term agreement. a celebration of the illusion of eternity... nothing less or more.

put it this way, we're living together for an indefinite amount of time, we're in love with each other, and we can either choose to be rich and exactly the same (marry) or poor and exactly the same (remain unmarried).

I am in the same situation as your girl (as in I am the foreign national and I have this girl who is a US citizen who wants to marry me). I wouldn't do it, although our "relationship" sounds just like yours, just because every moment of the way, I would feel like I "owe" her. The immigration system is broken, it encourages illegal immigration, but that's for another thread; for this thread, I just wanted to point out that I couldn't go through a wedding just to get a green card. I have an acquaintance who thought he could, but a few months down the road, it was too much for him to bear. In any case, if your girl can, more power to her, and congratulations to you and Emily on your wedding. :)
